Yesterday I already said that you sometimes see educated and intelligent people who fall for cheap tricks of gurus. It is especially the materializing trick that attracts people again and again although or maybe even because it is impossible in the law of physics to create something out of nothing. And it has often been proved by video recordings that a guru pulled a golden chain out of his pocket instead of materializing it or that he had the piece of jewelry hidden in his hand. What do these gurus say when you confront them with these videos and proof of their fraud?
Of course some of them are not approachable for just a normal person. They have a group of devotees who protect them from critics like you and me. You cannot reach them. Another way of gurus to dismiss criticism and this kind of evidence as faked and conspiracies against them by dark and evil forces.
Then there is another, a third way, which I have experienced and even read about on the website of one of those gurus. He gives a statement saying that yes, he does those tricks to attract people. It is the first step to make them come to him. He adds that then, once contact is established, people get to know his real wisdom and greatness. Once they get in touch with his divine light and progress on their path of following him, they realize that the magic tricks of materializing gold and ashes are for those who are still at the beginning of the path.
So he openly says that he cheats those seekers! And those whom he tells about it find it okay because they have the ego of ‘being more conscious’ about it. They defend him for it whenever someone criticizes him. What a lovely way: one cheats and those who were cheated love him for it and encourage him to cheat more and more people! The starting point of the relation with this guru is a lie. Where will it reach? What hope has a person who was attracted by this? And he will tell it to another one who will come, too, that is the sense. How much hope you are creating and then destroying? You are cheating innocent people! Unfortunately you see that many people go to these gurus, follow them and make them rich.
Yesterday I talked about how a sun eclipse was in former times seen as a sign that evil powers are active. There are more examples like this and I know these exist not only in Hinduism but also in other religions. Here in India chicken pox were in former times not seen as a disease but as a sign that a Goddess got angry. Her anger was said to show in this way with the small itching red spots all over the body.
Of course many children and also old people, whose body did not have the strength to resist the chicken pox, took long-lasting harm from this or even lost their lives because of this belief. Others, who were strong enough, just became healthy again without any harm done. Then it was seen as a sign that the Goddess forgave.
So this belief harmed a lot of families who didn’t send their ill ones to a doctor in the belief that it is Divine anger showing. In older times in this kind of situation they rather would go to a healer instead of going to a doctor because they thought it is not a physical thing, it is an energy problem. And then you imagine the case that the body recovers on its own which is often the case. Of course for them it will be the healer who did good work and could heal it. The healer got the credit for the great natural power of the body and people believe more in the healer’s abilities although there is nothing paranormal about that. They believe he can talk and persuade the Gods and Goddesses although he did nothing else than wait for the body to recover on its own.
There is no sure proof of when exactly our planet and all other planets came into existence. Scientists are able to calculate and say it approximately but in the end that, too, is like a rough guess which probably comes close to the truth but nobody can say it exactly. Scientists and research may have one thesis, one calculation of how it most probably could have been.
Religion however, which has its role in all parts of life and an own theory of how everything on earth works, of course also has an own interpretation about how and when this earth was created and how and when life started. Different religions will have different calculations and guesses which can vary very much from each other and again very much from what scientists say. And not only for the age of the planets, where scientists can only guess, for many natural phenomena, too, religion had and even today still has another explanation than the one proved by scientists.
In older times, when science was not as far developed as today, whenever our forefathers were not able to understand something, they related it to God, to religion, to a supreme energy, to the devil or to paranormal powers. They turned to religion for an explanation and it was usually provided.
If you see a sun eclipse for example: Hindu belief is that in the time when the sun is darkened, there are evil powers and sun and moon are in trouble. So when even sun and moon are in trouble, evil powers must be all around us and we need to take good care of ourselves. This is how in the time of a sun eclipse pregnant women and children did not leave the house. After the eclipse was over, they washed themselves and cleaned the house from all the rests of evil which might still be there.
You may have difficulties believing it but people here still do the same thing whenever there is a sun eclipse, even if it is only a penumbral one. It is funny because it is just a normal thing that happens again and again and of course science has sure proof why this happens. This constellation with the moon in between sun and earth happens regularly and is nothing mysterious but this belief still stayed. Even some well educated people stay inside, keep the children inside and are afraid. For no real reason at all. Interesting to see how big an impact old religious explanations can have.
Today our dear friend Su arrived at the Ashram after a long journey and we are very happy to have her here again.
Holi is also a festival for welcoming spring. Here it is the time for harvesting and the crops are ready. Farmers get their harvest in and start selling it. Tonight they will celebrate by warming crops and having a feast. If you go out in Vrindavan tonight you will see many fires and in the main places of other cities there are very big fires, too. Everyone comes together, prepare their food at the fire and also distribute it to others.
I said already that everything here is connected with religion. In Hindu scriptures there is one story: Once there was an evil king who had a lot of ego and did not believe in God. He told everyone that he himself was God. His son however was a very great spiritual soul who had much love, devotion and compassion in his heart. The king wanted to kill his son and tried to do it in many different ways. He threw him down from high mountains, let elephants walk over him and tried poisoning him. But God saved his son’s life again and again. The king also had a sister who had the gift of protection from fire. She could not burn in fire. When all his tricks failed the king asked his sister to take his son in her lap and sit in fire so that the son would die and she wouldn’t be harmed. But the son’s love and the grace of God saved his life: his aunt who had this protection burnt and died but he survived.
The fires which are lit tonight show the burning of this aunt, symbolizing negativity. It is a symbol that love and compassion will always survive.
Tomorrow will be the peak of celebrations and everybody will get fully crazy with colours. And at two o‘clock everything will be over.
