A Message for Beginning Yoga Teachers – 30 May 09

Today I met the students of the International Yoga Teacher Training again and gave a lecture. Actually I said that I do not see them as students. I see everybody in the same way as friends. And this is also how I want to connect with them, not only for the Yoga Teacher Training as students and teacher but with the heart and for life. I said them that I will always be there and everybody can connect with me via email or also by phone.

It was a nice lecture again even though I did not have any notes prepared. I also talked a little bit about their future in teaching. Many times I said them already that Yoga should not be in a certain tradition. You do not need to create another Yoga ‘brand’ and call it after your name to make it unique. I heard that people started getting a patent on their ‘yoga name’ and then say that only they are allowed to teach yoga in this way.

I believe that whatever you are teaching from your experience, out of your heart, it will always be unique. You have your own experience which you share with your students and you do not need to copy anybody. Just remember: you are unique as you are! Be proud of yourself and have fun in passing on your knowledge and experience to others!

Our friends Thomas and Iris came to visit us for the evening and we had a nice dinner together. Now we will go out and have ice-cream!

People are patenting types of yoga? That’s not very yogi of them, is it?

  2. Rachel

What kind of people would choose to become students of a yoga teacher that has gone and patented yoga moves? Doesn’t that seem pretty obviously disingenuous. Oh well! I guess a lot of people are in it for the fad.
