Last Day of School for our proud Fifth-Graders – 1 May 12

Today was the last day of school for the children of our primary school. They finished their exams already last week and had already a few days free time while the teachers were correcting their exams and finalizing their report cards. They thus arrived here in the morning, eager to get their results and to start into the well-earned summer holidays.

You may know that we started our school in 2007. In that time we actually only had the two Kindergarten classes in which the kids get used to sitting in school and in which they already learn the alphabet and the first numbers. In 2008 we started the first class of the primary school. In that time we had only about forty or fifty children altogether.

We have gone on teaching these children in spite of some difficulties which I wrote to you about, such as the lacking enthusiasm of poor parents to send their children to school. We have started with the concept of a violence-free school, employed only teachers who were ready to teach without corporal punishment and who taught the children equality – no child should be discriminated because of his or her caste. A lot happened, many children came and went and with the years we got to know the older ones better and better.

And this is how this year four children finished the fifth and last grade of our primary school: Aman Shukla, Goldy Gola, Rahul Shukla and Raju Das. Goldy and Raju have been to our school for the past four years, Aman and Rahul have been with us since the very beginning. They all have seen how we built new classrooms and new bathrooms, how we installed water cooler and water filter, how we added yoga to the curriculum and how everyone helped together when the homes of some of our children were flooded.

Now they finished our school and when we bid them farewell today, we had to look back on those five years that we have been running this school. We are proud of these children who now stand in front of a new chapter of their lives. They will go to an intermediate school from July on.

We decided to keep on sponsoring them because their parents would not be able to afford their further education. Obviously it will get more expensive the higher they will get but with positivity we look into the future and hope that we will be able to help them study as far as they wish and can so that they get a proper job that will support their families one day.

But now first of all they will have summer holidays for the next two months and will play and fly kites without thinking of school. In July they will start their next school year and we will again have new children at our school.

How exciting, your first group of graduates! It is so lovely to hear of good projects like this having a brilliant outcome. I wish them all the luck in their new school and in the future!

What a wonderfully proud and exciting moment both for the school and for the children. It’s proof that the philosophy of the school is beneficial to the children and that they are happy to learn. It’s a different system in this school compared to others, but I think the Ashram’s school is based on a principle of love and acceptance…which is something that many can learn from in this world. Things like forgetting about the caste system in school…it’s something to admire
