What is the difference in between religion and spirituality?
I have in the beginning of my life followed a religion and was even spreading its message. My grandfather was doing it, my father was doing it and so I also did it. I learned what was written in scriptures, I learned all the traditions and rules.
Religion has so many rules. It shows you exactly which way you are supposed to walk. It tells you which step to take and where not to go. Religion tells you if you do this, you will go to heaven and if you do that, you will go to hell. Or something similar, like God’s punishment or another way to make you afraid.
Even when I was preaching and living my guru life, I was a little bit different. Even in that time I liked to rather spread a message that makes you feel good. I liked to help people follow spirituality in their lives instead of only the hard rules of religion.
Spirituality does not have rules. It makes you feel good and gives you real joy. You know what you do and you do it because you love it. You do it because you enjoy it. You don’t do it because of some kind of fear or because a rule but because of love.
Religion is a firm and strict structure whereas spirituality is soft and flowing. Religion presses into clear and edgy shapes whereas spirituality makes round and soft. I believe religion comes from the mind and spirituality from the heart.

So true, but what makes religions confusing is that there’s usually some degree of spirituality mixed in with the ego mind mandates of a particular religion…i try not to judge anyone because of their religion, but for me seldom do i attend organized religious services…spirituality is and should be free without strings…bill
Yes you are right about your views – love is from the heart ….. and we all need so much love – that´s why we love spirituality ….
WOW!! What an insight. I have always like Spirituality vs. Religion. Thank you for the Great wisdom. Namaste.
Spirituality sounds as if it shares many qualities with femininity. Wonderful!!!
Religion or spirituality , doesnt matter, comes from the mind. everything comes from the mind, from the brain. brain is a processor. simply, people interpret things differently.
0E@Khadji Sophie. I don’t agree with you. There things which coming from the heart. The most things which comes from the brain creating a lot problems in this world.
Religions start with spirituality, then as rules form around the practices, they become more and more religious, then eventually reformers come around and try to make the religions more spiritual again, then the spiritually reformed religions become more and more like religions again, then spiritual reformers come again, and this cycle is repeated again and again, over and over through the centuries.
I think the difference between religion and spirituality is that often spirituality is about finding truth, and looking for clues, but being open. Religion is about all the rules already being written down as truths, and following them.
