Today I thought it would be a good day to give you a breakfast recipe again. I enjoy having fruits in the morning these days but the boys living at the Ashram need a bit more to fill their stomachs before going to school – and so they got upama today, a semolina dish that makes a sufficient and nourishing breakfast. It is a dish that comes from South India but people here in the North love it, too.
Upama – a salty and nourishing Semolina dish
If you look for something for breakfast or if you just want to have a snack in between, try this easy and delicious upama recipe!
How long does it take to make Upama?
Preparation Time:
Cooking Time:
Total Time:
Ingredients
2 small cups Semolina
4 Tomatoes
1 small cup Fresh Green Peas
4.5 Water
1 tsp Mustard
1 tbsp Olive Oil
1/2 Lemon
Salt according to taste
How to make Upama
Wash the tomatoes and cut them into small pieces. Now you take your semolina and give it into a pan or wok. Switch on your stove and stir it from time to time while it roasts without any oil for about two minutes.
You can then put the green peas into a pot with some water and heat it up until it boils. They only need to boil very shortly so that they are a bit soft.
Heat up the olive oil in a deep pan or wok and when it is hot, add the mustard. You then put the tomatoes into the pan, too. In this recipe you only need to make them warm and fry them a bit but you should not mash them to puree.
Before this happens, you can pour the water into the pan and get it to boil. When it is boiling, you slowly put the semolina into it. At this point you can add salt and lemon according to your taste. You stir from time to time and after about five minutes you will notice that the water has evaporated. Now your upama is done!
You see, a quick and easy breakfast dish!
