Yesterday I wrote about the revolution and protests in Egypt against their president Hosni Mubarak. He is still on power with his 82 years. In an article I read that you should not be surprised about it that Mubarak does not change himself and resign. He has been in power for so long and is now old, you cannot expect this change of him anymore.
This brought up one question in my mind which I have already thought and talked about with friends before. Why is there not an age of retirement for politicians? Why is there a certain age in all sectors, wherever you work, in which people should retire but not in politics? If, in most jobs, you reach 65 years or, in some countries, 70 years, you are dismissed, you don’t have the possibility to keep on working, even if you want to.
This is a measurement which is taken on one hand to give people the possibility to have some quiet and relaxed years in the end of their lives but even more because they cannot work with full efficiency anymore. They are not fit physically as well as mentally anymore. A company thus decides to employ younger people with whom the country can grow better. So how come that those men and women who lead whole countries and are responsible for making laws can be as old as they wish? Should not they be the fittest of all? Many of the highest Indian politicians are still in their posts at an age of over 80 with no wish to leave their place anytime soon to give a chance to the youth. It seems only politicians and gurus don’t have to retire when they get old.
I don’t say that everybody is mentally exhausted or slow at the age of 65! I could never say this, seeing my grandmother never forgetting one thing. However there is also not any test if people are of if they are not still fit to take the challenges which leading a country definitely bring! Of course, higher age brings experience, which is definitely precious in those posts. Another person however said to me that with this experience, the wish for personal gain subsides and the good wishes for the country grow. This is a statement I cannot believe in.
Not everybody who insists on remaining active in politics even at a high age has the selfless motive of wishing to serve his country. Many use their position to become richer and richer. Whether they are corrupt, like so many politicians in India, or they simply misuse their power, like Hosni Mubarak, they have the possibility to get benefit out of their position. Indian media says Mubarak has property worth more than 69 Billion US-Dollars spread in the whole world.
I think after working in politics for a good time, old politicians should feel themselves that it is time to resign. They should leave the wish for power and position and see that they can maybe function as advisors or helpers to younger leaders. Only in this way a country can move forward and instead of becoming and remaining old-fashioned, there will be space for modern ways and new thoughts which help the world grow together and develop as one.

I surely believe that experience in politics is something very important for a good politician. At the same time however I know that most politicians only learn how to make others fools without getting caught. The longer they are on their posts, the better they become in this game.
Young minds often have more ideals and try to make them reality. I also think we need more young people in politics all over the world to let it develop!
