Children who can just be Children, not little Adults – 13 Jul 09

Today we were talking with the Ashram via Skype again and we saw all the students who are now new at the Ashram. I think I have told you already that there are always some boys who live at the Ashram and do their spiritual studies there. Now there are some boys whom we did not meet in person yet but today we saw them on Skype and they saw us on the computer. And it was so nice, one of them, 12 years old, started dancing in front of the computer. He was singing and dancing and when he was done he asked us if we liked it.

I told this to Thomas later and we both agreed, that a 12 year old boy here in Germany would never just start singing and dancing like that. Children in this age already take care of their image here. I often feel sorry for children here in the west. I feel that their childhood is shorter. They start so early with trying to be someone else or trying to be like someone that they do not have enough time just being children. You can see so many girls, maybe 13 years old dressing and wearing make-up so that you think they are at least 17 years old. But when you hear what they speak you realize that they are just children, trying to be adult.

It is thought of as being weak or unattractive to be a child or to be childlike in the West. A child is less-competent and the environment is so competitive that there is no place for a child or childlike attitude. This is one thing I never realized but am becoming more aware of in my time away from the US. It’s a shame

It’s true that childhood should be preserved. It is an important time for laughter, play, creativity, and exploration. But I don’t what it is about life in the West… kids always grow up really fast. Maybe there is a pressure be “cool” in front of other kids and older kids. I have seen it and been a part of it. It’s different, but that’s how the West is.
