Mallorca, my second destination in Europe, was and is still a popular holiday destination, especially in summer. The Indian family who had invited me and with whom I was staying told me that the island was full of tourists at that time.
They had been looking forward to welcome me in their home and had already organized some Satsangs, lectures and meetings with people for me. I had not exactly known about these plans before but I was not very surprised, either. In my life and with my profession, it was quite normal that people asked me to preach for them.
My hosts had informed the local Indian community and so there were many Indian people who came together on these occasions and the living room quickly filled with Indians who were happy that a ‘holy man’ a ‘saint’ from their home country had come to visit their island.
So I gave lectures and did Mantra meditations – obviously in Hindi. Anyway, my audience was completely Hindi-speaking with one exception: my very new doctor friend from the plane came to join us one day. I was happy to see him sitting in between the people of the crowd. Although I knew he did not understand one word I said, he was sitting there and visibly enjoyed. He liked it that much that he came back with his family and some friends two days later.
All of this activity took place in their living room. I did not spend all my time there, though. My hosts told me if I wanted to have a walk, I could just walk down their road and I would reach the beach, the biggest tourist attraction of Mallorca. Of course I was curious what this place looked like and so I went down to the beach to walk and see for myself.
What I saw there was something I had never seen before: women were sunbathing in bikinis and even topless at the beach! With my 29 years, I had never seen a woman naked – or wearing as little as a bikini – in my life ever before, so you can imagine the attraction this beach had on me.
There were also many families with children who built castles of sand and had fun in the waves. Obviously, when walking at the side of the road, along the beach, my eyes were more directed to my right side, where the beach was, than to the road on the left.
When I walked there in late evenings however, my eyes turned to the road as it was much more interesting there, once it got dark. The road at the beach was also popular for its nightlife and I walked along, taking in the clubs, the people, the music and the whole atmosphere. Again I experienced how new this world was to me where everybody was free to take off nearly all clothes, where women were flirting openly and couples kissing each other publicly and where you even got offers for having one-night stands or paid sex. I saw people completely drunk, shouting, laughing and dancing to this music which was more noise than music for my ears. Even if it was not very attractive for me, it was still very interesting to look at.
Apart from the nightlife I also got to do some more sightseeing on the island. My host family showed me around and I got a good impression of the beauty of this place. We went to see some natural caves and I of course remembered my time in my cave, imagining how it would be to spend time in meditation alone in these natural caves.
I only had a few days on Mallorca and so the day of my departure came quickly. On that day I saw my new friend for the fourth time in such a short period. He came with his family and the family of his friend to see me off at the airport.
I remember how we were walking through the airport and I had a conversation with my friend’s wife. When we stepped onto the escalators to go one floor up, she asked me ‘Do you want to have a girlfriend or a wife someday? A woman in your life?’ I had to smile broadly and said with much conviction ‘Woman? Oh, no!’ I had no idea how my life would turn in the next years.
We finally said our good-byes and I invited them to come to India someday. When I was already walking away and waved back, my new friend shouted with a big smile ‘You can come and visit us in Germany, too!’
I went on towards the gate where my flight towards London would take off soon.

This conveys the atmosphere so well and I know the caves myself and I love them.
Finally naked as God made us.
Oh wow, I can hardly imagine how it must have been for you, so freshly out of the cave, just used to the whole day mantra meditation and then you come to Mallorca, you hear Techno music on the Ballermann (the German name for this party beach) and see all those people acting like crazy! It is good that you also experienced some peace and meditation in Europe!
I can imagine how you must have felt! When I was on Mallorca for the first time I was shocked how such a beautiful and peaceful beach as the one on the picture can be just in front of the street where hundreds of people get drunk each night, where they have parties, smoke, take drugs, where prostitution is going on and more. And then there are the other parts of this island, where there is really just beautiful nature, so great trees, beaches, it is just lovely to be there!
There always seem to be Indian communities everywhere you go! you find an Indian dance club, an Indian shop and often enough some kind of religious person or organization that they worship – i can imagine they liked it that you came!
Even for people from the west mallorca is very turbulent, noisy and naked 😉 Sure, they have nice beaches, but the atmosphere is not the best if you wish just to relax and enjoy silence and nature. Nevertheless once in your life you should experience mallorca 😉
