The past week was a week full of travelling for me! While I was, in earlier times, used to come to India only for going from the Delhi airport to the Ashram and back, I have crossed several thousands of kilometers within India in the past seven days!
On Monday, the week started with an early morning flight to Guwahati, the largest city of the Indian state Assam in the North-East of India. It is about 2000 kilometers east of Delhi and a two and half hour flight. I went there in the morning and returned seven hours later, so that I was home in the evening. Why? For bamboo.
You will know that we are using bamboo for the interior decoration of our Ayurvedic Restaurant Ammaji’s. So in order to get more information about the bamboo, to see samples and to meet some people working and trading with bamboo, I had crossed the country in one day and back. Of course I was exhausted once back at the Ashram!
I spent two days in Vrindavan, catching up on what I had missed on Monday, resting and making further plans. Very spontaneous plans, as usual – because on Thursday in the early morning, Ramona, Apra and I started with the car, going North towards the Himalayas.
Our goal was Kotdwara, a town in Uttarakhand which is one of India’s Himalayan states. It was a drive of about 300 kilometers – we were there in six hours. Another bamboo place, this time a treatment plant where bamboo is waterproofed and treated against insect attacks.
After our visit and some talk there, we continued to Haridwar, a town at the Ganges, where we had decided to spend that and the following night. We did not however spend the next day sightseeing – or, at least, not the sights that tourists get to see. We had a few addresses in Rishikesh which we wanted to visit and have a look at. Again, because of bamboo! They had used bamboo as a material and we wanted to get another picture and compare a bit with what we are doing at our restaurant. So we went into the town, crossed the Ganges, talked with different people and finally came back to the hotel. It was not really a holiday but Apra enjoyed her time nevertheless – she got to swim in the pool and eat lots of noodles!
Yesterday evening we were back at the Ashram – but I could not sleep long today: I started in the morning on another journey, this time only 200 kilometers, towards Hapur, the biggest bamboo market in our area. I saw different types of bamboo from all over the country – and also found the one we need.
It was a successful week and I am very tired but still feeling very good as well. I have the feeling I am still sitting in the car, moving, and tomorrow I will need to do my yoga slowly to stretch all my muscles – but it was good!
Why exactly we have to do all this work on our own, you ask? I will tell you another time why it was necessary for me to cross the country to get this done.
