I had planned several programs for that summer in London 2002 and so I visited a few families and was also invited to a temple. It was the Hindu God Krishna’s birthday, the celebration of Janmashtami that they had invited me for. I had lectures for a few days and of course the highlight was the day of Krishna’s birthday. In that time in London I gave several interviews for local newspapers and radios. Above you see one of those articles published about my stay there.
At the temple it was the usual program and I enjoyed it. The difference to my program in other places of the UK was that I was not staying with a family. They had arranged my accommodation in a flat not far away from the temple. It was a two-room-apartment in the borough Slough, which is a little bit out of London. So I had really enough space just for myself, with a bathroom and a nice kitchen. I did not have to use that kitchen a lot though, because I was always invited to eat at the temple or at somebody’s home. So I also did not have to eat alone.
I was invited several times by people to join their lunch or dinner and so I spent a good time partly at the temple or someone’s home and partly in my flat, receiving visitors or being on my own. Two of the men who had come to see my lecture at the temple visited me every day for an hour in my flat. They were eager to learn more about the scriptures and to understand Sanskrit better, so they came to me. For one hour every day I taught them Sanskrit, read scriptures with them and tried to help them understand the meaning of the words in those verses.
I was there for several days, more than a week, and I remember how one day a friend came by. He looked around in the flat and then at me and asked me ‘Don’t you clean in here?’ He was right, the floor had become dirty over the past days. I had noticed that before and I had wanted to clean, too. I had searched all over the place for a broom but had found none! What I had found was a vacuum cleaner. I knew that other people in Europe used this thing for cleaning their homes but I had no idea how! There was a plug, I could figure that much out, but then which button to press? And how would it actually clean, would I have to fill something in there or would it work on its own? I had absolutely no idea! Had there been a broom, I would have cleaned myself but as there was none, I was at a loss.
I told this to my friend, who looked at me in slight disbelief. I was actually not embarrassed. I just had not known how to use that thing! So he started laughing and I laughed along with him. He took the vacuum cleaner and cleaned the apartment. It was not a lot of work, as the apartment was small and he was done quickly. As I did not stay much longer I did not have to use it again.
