I told you already that I met a lot of new people on my journey in Germany in April 2004 but that was not only due to the fact that I went to several new places but also because of my injured leg. I had got used to the pain a bit but it was still hurting and I was wearing a brace that kept the knee steady.
I was of course not able to do a lot of things – one of these was lifting my suitcase. In all my travels I had used the same suitcase, a black hard case Samsonite. It had two rolls on one side and a handle on the other so that I could roll it. I could thus move from one place to another with my suitcase, just as long as there were no steps in between. Or no gaps over which I would have to lift it. So each time when I needed to get into a train or out of a train, I needed someone to help me. And in this way, I met a lot of friendly, helpful people some of whom came to my programs and some of whom became friends!
I visited my oldest friend in Germany, too, the doctor in Luneburg. I obviously showed him my leg and told him and his family what had happened. By then I had been already travelling a few weeks and had felt that the pain was getting worse. I still had painkillers in my bag but I did not use them. When I told this all to my friend, he said that I could also show this to one of his friends, a German doctor who was a specialist in this kind of accidents and problems. I agreed and found myself in another doctor’s practice just a day or two later.
I had the MRI report with me which the Indian doctor had made. When the German doctor looked at it however he said that he could not see enough on it, it was not clear enough for him. So I had to go into the MRI again, a German one this time, holding my leg very still so that they could take a picture of the inside of it.
The doctor had a look at the MRI picture, lifted his eyebrows and told me that there was absolutely no way that this would be fine without surgery. He told me that I would definitely have to undergo surgery and that I would not be able to manage with the pain much longer in the way I had done.
Who would be happy to hear something like this? But you need to accept the reality as it is. It was confirmed then, I had to go through this procedure. I was not shocked, after all I had been walking around with this pain for some time, but I was definitely not happy.
It was great to have the support of my friend in that time. As a doctor, he could explain me much about the procedure of such a surgery and he even offered that I could get it done in Luneburg and stay in his family’s home until I would have recovered enough. The doctor who had done the MRI had said however that it was not an emergency and that I would not have to do it straight away, even if I should not delay it unnecessarily. So I decided that I would have that surgery done when I would go back to India.
In that way I would have time to finish my program in Europe and I would not have to fly soon after surgery. I called my family once this decision had been made and asked my brothers to find out in which hospital I could have this done.
