Dreaming – another State of the Mind – 5 May 08

Yesterday I wrote about dreams and sleep. And I explained the yoga philosophy of the different states of consciousness and that dreaming is another state than sleeping. You do not get a dream while sleeping. You are either sleeping or dreaming. And of course many people sleep during a part of the night and dream during the rest of the night. Normally people then say they were dreaming while sleeping. Like this it seems to them that they had a long sleep. However they actually went from one state of consciousness to another.

There are also daydreamers. They seem to be awake but they are dreaming. They fell into another state. Daydreamers are not grounded and their mind is flying which is a problem of the first chakra.

There is another example to make more clear that dreaming and sleeping are two different things. Once I had a very nice dream but in the middle of the dream I suddenly was fully awake. So I got up and drank some water. It was such a nice dream that I wanted to have it again, to see the rest of it, so I lay back down and tried to go on in this state of dreaming. And it worked, the dream continued. I was not sleeping, I was not awake but I was dreaming.

Some dreams calm you down or release tensions from your busy day. Most dreams however keep your mind busy and working which again makes you tired. With the help of meditation you can learn to define your state of consciousness. You can make the decision in which state you want to be. Meditation is training for the mind.

We packed our things again today and left Essen. Noemi dropped us at the train station and we started in direction Hannover to come to Lueneburg. We were welcomed heartily by Michael, Andrea and their son Ravael. It is always very nice to be here. Tomorrow I will start working here with Michael's patients, too. He is a popular and successful psychotherapist and doctor and very close to my heart.

Dreaming another state of sleep? that makes sense because when I dream it is always during the times when I’m only half asleep and half not. It’s the in-between state of mind where the brain is awake but the body isn’t yet.

I had this crazy dream last week about being late for an exam, just like I was in college again!

From a Western perspective, there are actually 5 stages of sleep, including the 5th stage (called REM sleep) in which dreaming occurs. The stages are defined by the type of brainwave the brain is producing, varying from fast and jagged to slow, large, and methodical. We progress through the sleep stages until we reach the REM stage after about 90 minutes- this is when dreaming occurs. (REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement because, as we dream, the eyes tend to move rapidly like we are using them for vision in the dream, the heart rate is rapid, and the body moves quite a bit). We then progress through the other stages of sleep and return to REM after another 90 minutes or so. The whole cycle repeats about 4 or 5 times per night.Because different sleep stages (or states of consciousness) are characterized by different brain-wavelengths, we can induce different states of consciousness during waking hours according to these brainwaves. For example, daydreaming and meditation induce different brainwaves than normal waking consciousness, similar to our sleep stages. 😀
