In yesterday’s description of a funny person believing to have sex with aliens, I skipped one thing that she told: that dreams are not actually dreams – something that a lot of spiritual, religious and esoteric people believe, too. Today I want to talk a bit about the different explanations that people have for dreaming.
Let’s start with yesterday’s psychic lady’s description of what dreaming is: a friendly way of letting you know what you were doing without scaring you. She believes that your mind goes out to travel with your spirit friends, aliens from outer space, while your body is resting. As most people might be afraid of being face to face with an alien, our mind thus tricks us into believing that this all was a dream.
Okay, I admit, this is in my eyes not a serious attempt in explaining dreams. The most logical counter-argument is that we are not always dreaming of aliens but of very normal things, too. So if you dream of meeting your ex-boyfriend and his mother in the middle of a busy road and suddenly realize that you are naked, I doubt that this actually happened!
Other people say that the time when you dream is when you have the connection to your soul, which knows about your past lives and future incarnations. They say you can get information of past lives that can help you understand your current one. As time and space don’t actually exist in their opinion, you are also able to see your future of this life and get warnings of what may happen so that you can avoid it.
I don’t believe in any of this either. I don’t think that any of us knows the future, not even in our dreams, and I don’t believe in reincarnation either anymore, so I don’t believe that you re-dream your past lives!
What do I think dreaming is then? I just believe in the very boring, mainstream answer that psychologists and sleeping experts all over the world believe in: that your subconscious is still working while you are asleep and processing the millions of impressions that you took in while you were awake. When you see an apple, you don’t only see the apple, your brain stores a whole lot of data about it. The apple is red with a few yellow spots, you know that this is because the sun didn’t reach there. You learned this information in your childhood. It was in a book that your father used to read to you. The apple smells sweet, it is round, it has seeds inside and thousands of details more. All of this happens in a split-second in your brain. Obviously, your brain needs time to process all that is happening throughout the many seconds of a day! That is what I believe happens while you are asleep and is reflected in what you dream of.
Especially in times that are emotionally intensive, your brain is very active and has to sort this all out, which is why you dream more intensively. That does not mean that all the nonsense you dream will be reality – otherwise you can prepare yourself for standing naked in front of your ex and his mother soon!
