Of course the topic of arranged marriages is always interesting for visitors who come here to get to know more about the culture and the country. This is how we have this topic at the dinner table from time to time. Once, when we were talking about that, we heard a story which I thought is definitely worth telling you in this content.
We had a guest who had come to India to meet her Indian friend in Delhi. Her friend was a girl from Mumbai together with whom she had studied in New York. While they were in their studies, the girl wanted to go for a holiday to meet her parents. She arrived at the airport in Mumbai and as expected her family was there to pick her up. Instead of going home however, they went to a big celebration hall. They had brought beautiful festive clothes and asked the girl to change. When she asked where they were and what was going on, she got to hear a shocking revelation: she had arrived at her engagement party!
You can imagine how shocked she was. She had courage though and told her family in front of all guests that she would do no such thing as to marry a complete stranger whom her parents had chosen for her. She took a taxi and the next possible flight back to New York.
Obviously, her parents were embarrassed through this and not happy with her decision at all. The relation was bad at first after this incident but slowly recovered. The young woman was around 30 years old then and the parents had already lost hope that she would find someone.
Then, finally, she had found her perfect match and told her parents who were obviously overjoyed. They decided to marry in Delhi and our guest had just come by before the celebrations to find some peace here.
We loved this story because it shows how a young person has the courage to leave old and outdated traditions behind. It must have of course caused pain to the parents at first but then they understood that a young woman of more than twenty years has her own wishes and dreams and is capable of finding her partner for life herself.
At the same time you think of all those girls who may not have the courage to react in this way. The fact that the parents tried is in itself maybe not surprising but sad.

this is terrifying! I can only imagine how upset she must have been. She is excited to go home and relax with her family for a short while and then they spring this on her! How dreadful!
I can only say thank goodness she had been studying in New York. I understand that this is part of Indian culture, but she could have been unhappy for the rest of her life. Maybe if she hadn’t spent time outside of India she wouldn’t have had the courage to stand up to her parents!
Cudos to that girl for having the courage to stand up for herself in this case. It must have been a very hard to do this at the time, but I’m sure that she felt relieved as she was on the flight home. I know that her parents were embarrassed but in the end it was for the better as she found who she wanted to marry…I’ve learned from this woman to stand up in the most stressful cases for your views.
