Indian and Western Culture influencing each other – 11 Mar 08

Yesterday I said that you have to see the good things, the qualities. And this is not only important with people and relationships but in general with life, situations and also with the places you are. In India and in its culture I find many things that I don't like but also a lot of things that I love. And the same in Europe where I am mostly traveling. You will never find a country where everything is complete and perfect without even one aspect that is disturbing this. However if you concentrate on the qualities you will see that it is your perception that makes you decide if you like a country.

Unfortunately we are more attracted to bad things. It is easier. That is how many bad things are coming from the west into India and the other way around, too. In India so many young people take the west as an example and start drinking, smoking and taking drugs. Families are breaking up and family members are not supporting each other anymore as they used to. Western problems are arriving here, like the question where old people go to as no one takes care of them anymore. This is really crazy. We are developing but in the development you should take and accept the good things, not the bad ones.

In the same way I feel for the Western World. There I meet too many people who want to become guru and have a lot of followers. They are living in ego and want everybody to touch their feet and bow in front of them. They take the whole drama of Indian gurus. These people want to be heard and want to be seen. It is insecurity which makes them act like this and which makes the mentality that they want to be treated like a guru. They behave like a master or guru. I see many times people in my healing profession who have this mentality. They took the bad drama from India. I have experienced the life of a guru before I went into the cave and this is past. I cannot even imagine going back in this kind of life. When I see those people I am wondering why they are leaving their originality and why they want to copy this. I appreciate much more when you are how you are, natural. Everybody is unique. And so I am happy that I can bring the good things from India to the Western World and bring good things back in return.

Corporate America has their hand in India’s pocket. Large companies are bypassing fair wage and labor laws by outsourcing their business. Companies like Monsanto for example who make slaves out of US farmers are doing worse to Indian Agriculture. But corporate America is doing just as much damage by selling their products abroad. They bring unhealthy habits to India at a low cost; they make comfort cheap (always at the great expense of others). Because of their reputation and their wealth they dominate the market, raping and pillaging, leaving a docile and addicted ruin in their stead.

It is important to know what is going on in the world and to pay attention to the suffering of others and wonderful to change what can be changed. Be careful not to make an enemy of large companies. These companies are made up of people; your friends, your parents, your children. Some people are aware of the harm they are doing to others and do not care. Some do not understand what they are doing. In either circumstance forgive these people. I am not suggesting complacency, but only that your actions be taken compassionately. Derive your energy from compassion and not hate. Can you imagine that if the CEO of Monsanto could truly feel the pain he was causing the families of farmers that he could continue his work. If he could feel the same anguish in his own chest could he stand to continue? He has been told that putting ethics aside is good business and that good business is more important than anything else. What is the difference between you and this man who is unable to feel the pain of those he puts out of work if you hate him? Are you not blind as he is blind, you lack understanding as he lacks understanding? You see the pain caused by lack of understanding. Start changing this circumstance by having compassion for those you perceive as your enemy. Choose to understand them. If anything will allow the blind to suddenly see it is an introduction to grace and goodness. The compassion you feel for people that suffer from corporate greed has inspired me. Thank you Alister.

Yeah I have seen this, Slumdog Millionaire really affected America, as does Krishan and even Indian cooking. It’s a constant exchange.

yeah you can’t really control how another culture perceives you’re culture and then typifies, extremeifies, and replicates it.

Great point! Every culture has its pros and cons. I think that is why travel is so valuable! We get to see the ways other people around the world live… in turn, we realize things that we both dislike and appreciate about our own cultures. It is wise to pick the best of all worlds and combine them into your ultimate way of life. Why bring the negative to other places? We need global awareness so this doesn’t happen…
