We always meet so many people when we are travelling out of India and giving programs but also when we are at the Ashram. When we are in other countries, I visit another town each week and of course there are different people each week. When we are in India, I am just here at the Ashram and there are people who come as participants for retreats, as volunteers or simply as guests at the Ashram. I like to call all of these people my friends. This is in my opinion a good way to address them.
Of course I may behave a bit differently for everybody. Those who come for a counseling, those who only come to visit, those who come for a retreat, those who greet me on the street and those whom I know better, with whom I have spent more time. People can come from any doorway, they can come through any medium. Each of them can be a friend.
I like to be positive and assume that each of them can also become a longtime friend. When it comes to having a friendship you need to understand and know the other one. It has to get old and time has to be passed together. Then there is enough room for understanding each other. You can build trust and love. I am not trying to say that old friendships don’t break, that also happens, but mostly friendships break which are new and fresh. In the beginning time it can happen that two friends don’t pay enough attention and don’t understand each other well enough yet. Keep patience, let it get old and enjoy the friendship. Trust is a must. And love of course. Give love freely to everyone and give friendships room to grow.

Thank you Swami Ji, Thank you for the beautiful things that you are saying about friendships. When you meet someone you can love them instantly. You can feel the deepest sense of joy for their being and deepest compassion for them. You do not yet know their form or their history. Learning it many times adds another dimension of beauty to the friendship. And perhaps if you loose your sight or their history disturbs you to much you may even loose the ability to love them when they are no longer strangers. I enjoy this first stage of friendship very much. I also deeply enjoy developing love and friendship.
