‘Not afraid of anyone but God’ means being afraid of everything! – 18 Jan 13

Yesterday I explained how religion supports the fear of ghosts and magic in children as well as in adults, at least here in India. Religion teaches fantasy stories as though they are the truth and gives solutions to the problems that arise from those fictional bad energies, ghosts and curses. They don’t only make people afraid of ghosts and demons though, they also make them afraid of God. This is however not only the case for Hinduism but for all other religions, too. Fear and especially the fear of God is an essential tool for religion to get people to follow what is written in scriptures and what priests say. From this fear, the saying emanated that one is ‘not afraid of anyone but God’. Let’s go a bit deeper into the true meaning of this saying.

What have religious people learned? All religions that I know of say that you should see God in everything and everyone. There is God in you and there is God in me. Don’t be rude to others, they are just as much divine as you are. Value life because any kind of life means there is God in it.

At the same time however, religion clearly teaches people to be afraid of God. God is the almighty that has a master plan for your life, who can make you successful or let you fail. If you pray and follow his orders, he will reward you. If you commit sins, you will go to hell, get hit by your Karma, be sent into the purgatory, face an awful doom or something similar. “Be afraid of God” is the message – and the main reason why people do what religion tells them to. Then they don’t think anymore – after all, their salvation is at stake.

What do these two teachings together mean? You should be afraid of God and God is in everything and everyone. Religious people are actually people who are afraid of everyone and everything. They spend their whole life in fear. Those who say they are not afraid of anyone but God are thus those who are the most fearful, fearing everything and everyone. It is not anything to be surprised about! They chose religion out of fear that religion could be right and they could really go to hell. They are fearful from the root and chose the way of religion because religion adds fuel to this fear, presenting guidelines to just narrowly escape eternal pain and other scary prospects.

I really don’t understand how horrible such a God is who creates permanent fear, who wants to keep people frightened and scared, who does not want them to just be happy as they are. I do understand those who promote this, though – they have their business interests, they have based their life on the fear of others.

This all makes it very clear why people turned away from religion and God. They understood, over the course of time, that fear is being instilled in them. They don’t want to be afraid of everything and everyone anymore. Instead, they want to live free, they want to be happy and they want to start new projects without any fear. So why should they follow advice that makes them frightened, which makes them stick to narrow rules of what they can and cannot do. Which limits them in their possibilities and prohibits them from being as free, as happy and ultimately as successful as they could be.
