Yesterday I told you about a talk Govind and I had about fake Sadhus and true Sanyasis. This talk was not done with just mentioning how a Sadhu should live and how he should not live or what he should do and what he should not do. We talked about their hypocrisy, about their sex scandals and about their followers.
I named some Sanyasis whom Govind and I had met in our childhood. They were very renowned and nobody had any doubt about their intelligence and greatness. They were the authors of many books which were sold everywhere and they were highly educated and respected people.
I will not disclose these people’s names here because they were exactly this kind of fake Sanyasis that I was talking about yesterday. They had big Ashrams in many different places, they were very interested in money and also in women. Most of these people died in the 80’s but their stories are remembered and of course there are still followers who don’t let their names fall into oblivion.
Everybody knew about their adventures with many different women. I have seen them flirt and once I even saw one of them having intercourse. Of course not everybody had seen that much but it was common knowledge in town. And obviously their followers knew as well as the women around them.
So you see, what is happening today is nothing new, it has been going on for decades if not centuries. The guru did it, his followers saw it and when they became gurus, they simply followed his example. They were Indians who have never been to the west, they had Indian followers and Indian women.
What I don’t understand here is how they can be so respected while everybody knows about the double life they are living? On one hand they are called Sadhus and Sanyasis, they are followed by many people and they all pretend to live a celibate life but on the other hand they have sex with a lot of women – and everyone knows about it!
For them it is clear though: they have to live this double life because their scriptures describe how they should be while nature tells them something very different. They have a natural instinct, natural urge and in my opinion it is nothing wrong to have that – it is wrong to suppress it!
At this point Govind added another aspect to the discussion which we have talked about before, too: those women were usually not raped or forced to have sex with their guru. They went to those Sanyasis from their own will. Maybe they were attracted by the holiness or maybe they were proud that they could so close to someone whom others can only see from far. Common people may not ever be able to meet this man – but they came until his bedroom. It is sex in a spiritual wrapper which is fascinating for them. Or maybe they thought of this as an achievement or a special blessing.
About this point I have my doubts though. I am sure these gurus are not in any way different than other men. The farmer can have the same enjoyment in sex as the king. It cannot have been such a great experience that would not be possible with anybody else.
So the guru may not be a rapist. He might be a cheater of course because those women could have been married and he would not mind. So they would cheat and he would, too. In the end however he is in my opinion more responsible than those women. Obviously he has a need for sex but in order to stay in his double life he has to manipulate them into thinking it is something divine that they should not tell anyone else. Such and similar stories show how women were manipulated into having sex.
And this all was known by those around them. It was covered up but you cannot hide such things, so everyone knew. Still, everyone had respect and they were seen as ‘divine’. While I also had respect for these people because they were intelligent and wrote a lot of great books or other works, I have to say that I would not call them divine.
You cannot deny their intelligence because they had sex with someone. Some followers get disappointed when they believe that their guru is holy and divine but he should not have sex. If he had sex and they found out, they are deeply disappointed and don’t ever speak of his wise words. In reality however I would say it is natural for them to have sex just like every other person. It is the suppression of their natural needs that made them have sex. But if they have created something good, you can still see this as what it is.

Their followers probably harbour thoughts of having money, power and casual sex also. Truly spiritual awakened people still have instincts a but they are able to find a healthy balance with them because they know themselves to be spirit and are therefore not so attached to them. Earlier in my journey I was attracted to people who claimed to be spiritual but were really still driven by power and wealth because I was still grounded in the temporal and driven by my instincts. But after my awakening, I was able to see through these people, with a little help from people like yourself and Deniz Tekiner. One cannot take away people’s (followers) delusions; they must surrender them when they are ready to wake up. Only the very strongest have awakened in this sea of delusion.
John makes an interesting point that people may choose teachers who are largely reflections of themselves. I began to notice this already when I was in my 20s and just starting the explore spiritual scenes and groups, that many people who did not like the idea of discipline in their own lives would choose teachers who also lacked discipline in their lives. I think many “seekers” have spiritual “have your cake and eat it dreams,” meaning they would like to have all the things of the world, but also be spiritually blissed out at the same time, sort of like the image people have of the Maharishi or Rajneesh, of having glorious mansions and boundless material luxuries, but also being spiritually ecstatic at the same time. I don’t believe they were any more ecstatic than other millionares, but they sustained ecstatic public relations images for their gullible followers to admire and aspire to.
I’ve noticed especially that seekers who have problems of addiction including sex addictions often seem to choose gurus with the same afflictions.
Post awakening, I still wouldn’t mind a bit of finacial security, but I am no longer attracted to the egoists and vampires. I like being around nice people. They are the ones who have found “abundance.”
Yes, financial security is sure a great thing to have, and can be an especially important and realistic concern in a society like mine which doesn’t take much care for those who are destitute or in need. I subscribe to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and understand that material needs are a realistic part of life. Many gurus in great part want their followers to not have realistic material concerns so they will give their money to the gurus, which will demonstrate followers’ successful “detachment” within the guru group and culture.
Why can’t these Gurus and Sanyasis just stop to cheat society and themselves. If you want to be a modest man and follow special principles you have to proof, that you are able to fulfill this task. If not, you don’t have to pretetend anything.
Those poor women fooled and tricked into thinking that they were having a divine experience, when all the while they were just taken advantage of. Are they so brainwashed into thinking that they need this man, how can they think that he is so worth having?
