Working, Laughing and Enjoying Pain in Bed – 31 Oct 10

Today early in the morning I got up like each day and went over from the cave to our office, sat down and switched on the computer. So far my morning went like every other day, I was fully fine and everything seemed normal. Then, after some time I had to sneeze and from that moment on my day changed. With the sneeze came a sudden and sharp pain in my lower back. Unfortunately the pain did not leave and when I wanted to get up it was just too painful and I stayed on my chair. It was really intense pain and when I had to go to toilet, Ramona, Purnendu and Yashendu rolled me on my office chair into the bathroom.

Later they helped me to lie on the bed and Yashendu put a hot pack on my back. He and Purnendu kept exchanging the warm towels and as two more friends were in the room Ramona was concerned that the towel covering me should not slide down too low, worrying that nobody should see me naked. I do not really care very much about that but seeing her concern made everybody around laugh. The situation was so funny that I had to laugh, too. Unfortunately from laughing, like from any movement, the pain increased, so I did all what I could to just quietly laugh inside. We were talking, laughing and joking and as every movement worsened the pain, I controlled myself not to shake while laughing.

This is the body, it is just like a machine and you never know what will happen. I didn’t do anything, I just sneezed and not very extravagantly, just normally! Well, I don’t know what movement has caused the pain. I thought it would reduce after some time but it only got better in the afternoon. It got better though and I am positive that soon it will be fine again. Until then I am lying around, working on bed, laughing and enjoying the pain with my family. So there is no reason to worry, just to wonder what a miracle our body is!

While this can happen to anyone, it can be very helpful as a preventative and can greatly decrease chances of this happening to keep the muscles and especially the back muscles strong. This can be done with just half-hour workouts twice a week.

Pray you feel better soon. May be you pulled a muscle while sneezing. Ramona you are a lovely wife. Love and Light.

Seems like you experience something that we call “Hexenschuss” in German! My mother had it once in the car and it was so strong that she wanted to stay overnight there (she didn´t want to move!). I wish you feel better soon! Lots of love from us

Use Ice, ice, ice! cold will reduce the swelling. heat will bring blood to area. Using ice at first is best, then later, when acute pain has subsided, heat will bring blood/oxygen to heal tissues. May your back pain heal fast!!!Jai Ma!

When people experience physical pain it can draw them into their bodies and make them very aware of the moment. The pain is taking up too much space for the past or future to be present in their minds. This is a great opportunity for meditation! Your schedules clear and it is hard to think! Try picturing physical distance between your body and yourself. It may help to concentrate at a spot on the back of your head. Imagine that spot was you and everything else, your body or form. Observe your pain. What is so bad about this feeling? Allow yourself not to mind it. After all there is nothing you can do about it. Being sick can be a really joyful time in the body!

Haha Swami Ji, it puts a smile on my face to think of you laughing while experiencing that strong back pain. Haha it really does.

  12. Terry

Oh no Swami Ji! Get well soon! I hopethat sneeze didn’t do you in for too long. I’m glad you get to spend time with your family and that they care so much for you.

It is so weird how these little things can set our bodies off. Sometimes a little bit of pain makes you happy with how your body normally feels and how well it functions.

It is hard to deal with injury of the body. We often take for granted the health and function of the body. We are amazing creatures with the ability to heal ourselves. But it is hard when the body is out of commission and we have to learn how to get by with limited movement. But the best policy is to laugh! And it is good to remember what movement and ability you still have and to be grateful for it.

Laughing is sometimes the best medicine. Tons of pills can’t help you, if you feel sorry for yourself. Just smile, pain won’t kill you, it makes you stronger 😉
