Our Ashram in India – a Place to do Nothing at all – 13 Oct 09

Yesterday I was talking with Jens and Regina who have been here for three days now. I asked them how they liked it here and if they enjoyed. They both told me that it was great and then they told something which I found very interesting. Jens said that it was a very different experience that he doesn’t have to do anything, that he can just relax.

They told that after a very busy day at work, when they have many thoughts in the mind, had to think the whole day for themselves and for others, they just want to relax and leave all thinking behind. But then what they do is not doing nothing. They watch TV to relax or they read or work in the garden. They keep their mind busy with other things so that they don’t have to think of their work. But they don’t really do ‘nothing’. They need to do something to relax. This is how the mind doesn’t ever go into complete relaxation and cannot come into emptiness and this feeling of timelessness.

Even on holiday you usually have a big list of things that you have to do, so actually you are working because you have to do all these things. And here they are, the only thing that they have in their schedule is sleeping, eating and, if they want to, a small trip into the city. One day they will go to the Taj Mahal but for the rest of the time they now get used to doing nothing. And they enjoy it!

Jens said he doesn’t know if he forgot how it is not to do anything and not having to do anything or if he never learned it. Here you can just fully relax your mind from whatever thought is going on. They both said that they would like to share this experience with other people who are thinking to spend a holiday in India at our Ashram. It is a natural state of meditation in which you learn to relax completely within yourself, without anything else. Drawing a zero into your mind. It is like slowly getting used to thinking nothing, just watching and enjoying and feeling the love in the atmosphere.

It is great, I feel happy if my friends come here and have this experience in the Ashram. Just be yourself and relax.

This is very true, Swami. Before I arrived at the ashram, I had been travelling in Ireland and England. In both of these countries, I was constantly going, seeing, doing, and experiencing. It was fun but also exhausting! When I arrived here, it took me some time to adjust to the slower pace. But after being here a week and a half, I am now appreciating the quietude, the relaxation time, and the stillness. I am now enjoying small moments filled with peace and not looking for something to “do” all the time.
It reminds me of being at my family’s cabin in the mountains in the U.S. There, we have no cell phone service, no TVs, and only electricity when we turn on the generator. We have to bring our own clean water and cook all of our meals. We spend our days hiking, reading, playing card games, relaxing, and eating yummy food. I always feel rejuvenated after trips like these, so thank you again!!

When you’re in an Ashram, you really have to get used to do nothing at all. As soon as you calm down, it starts to be wonderful. You can escape the world for a while and enjoy every little detail in your surrounding, isn’t that nice? 🙂
