Tourists in India: Take care what you drink – Our Ashram Water is safe! – 26 Oct 11

Yesterday I told you about the risks of staying in unknown little guest house or so-called Ashrams only in order to save some money. There are some more factors that you should consider when thinking about which Ashram to choose for your stay in India. One very big aspect is water in India.

We have made a lot of experience with many different people coming to India and one thing that every tourist worries or at least thinks about when coming here is the water. You have even just started planning your trip to India and the first advice that you will get everywhere is that you should only drink mineral water from sealed bottles that were not tampered with. Don’t ever drink tap water and also take care to order your coke without ice as the ice cubes will be made of tap water. People even advise you not to eat uncooked vegetables, tomatoes or salad because it is most probably washed with tap water. When you eat in a restaurant, the waiter will serve you a glass of tap water with your food. Please don’t drink that but ask the waiter to bring you a bottle of water and a glass. Only in this way you can be sure not to be drinking tap water.

Tap water in India is full of bacteria which can cause diarrhea. Of course the local population drinks exactly this water and their system has absolutely no problem with that. The digestive system of any tourist however is not used to those bacteria and reacts by emptying the bowels of the affected person. The consequences can range from spending a lot of time on toilet and feeling really bad to dehydrating, visiting the doctor and even staying in a hospital. All in all something that you really wish to avoid.

It is thus good advice to take care of what you drink but how far do you go? Some people take much care to keep their mouth closed while showering so that they don’t accidentally swallow it. Many others also brush their teeth with the bottled mineral water and most tourists really don’t eat anything green and raw while in India because of this fear of the water. It may be justified because how much do you really know about the water of where you are staying and eating?

This is the point at which I can tell the guests of our Ashram that they don’t have to worry if they stay with us. We provide mineral water in bottles to everyone for drinking. When you sit down at our table for breakfast, lunch or dinner, the water that is served comes from those bottles. The water that comes out of your tab in your bathroom is filtered water. It has flown through a reverse osmosis filter that filters bacteria of all different kinds and gives you water that you could even drink. The children of our school drink exactly this water. Nevertheless we offer you bottled water for drinking but you don’t need to worry when brushing teeth, washing your face or showering.

Additionally our kitchen cooks only with this filtered water. Every vegetable is washed in this water and everything that is soaked or even cooked is cooked with filtered water. So when you come and stay at our Ashram, you can eat salads and raw food, which many India travellers have missed for weeks. Why? Because we take care of the health and well-being of our friends, guests, participants and visitors. Of course it costs more to buy bottled water. Of course the filter system is not cheap either. But we care and we would not like any of you to experience any problems because of the water quality. If you choose an Ashram for your stay in India, would you not like to be worry-free about drinking water?

Isn’t this worth covering the costs of your stay?

Last time I travelled in India I even had chlorine tablets with me to kill any bacteria out of water when I was trecking in areas where bottled water was difficult to get. It is a big hazzle and does not taste great, additionally it is not very cheap when you drink as much water as I do but I did not want to take the risk. So yes, paying for water is absolutely worth the money!

I even brushed my teeth with bottled water. My teeth flesh got swolen from the Indian tap water. Important is also that the cups are not yet full of tap water when pouring bottled water in it. 🙂 Thanks for the tips.

Of course, when we are very thirsty or very hungry we can’t wait and we are impatient. And then we just try to satisfy our natural needs as quick as possible and often we don’t really pay attention to what we consume in this moment. Then it’s important to calm down and to ensure, that we know what exactly we are eating and drinking.
