Arriving on Grand Canaria – 10 Jun 14

Today we had our first day in Gran Canaria and we are already very tired after a long day. Nevertheless I will tell you about our journey here and what we have done on our first day here!

We spent the whole morning of our journey with preparations – packing and making food for the journey. We had a great German breakfast with Thomas and Iris and then finally started from Wiesbaden with the train. On a stop in Koblenz, Apra and Ramona each had an ice-cream – or you can say, Apra had two ice-creams, because she wanted to have Ramona’s ice-cream nearly immediately after she had tried her own! So we all shared and passed the time well until the next train came. A bit later, Apra fell asleep.

She woke up again at the airport and was immediately excited! From our flight to Germany, she now knew approximately how such a plane journey looked like. She requested: today I want to fly with a small plane! Obviously, the plane was smaller than the one with which we came to Germany and she was thus satisfied, already telling us how we would fly.

The flight was great – free WiFi in the plane, a dinner with delicious parathas and a fantastic sunset. Apra slept for some time but when we reached, she was back up: ‘We are there! We are with Betty!’ And there she was, picking us up. To Apra’s delight, she had a red car with a red car seat – Apra’s favourite colour! Everything was great and we had a wonderful first night in our flat in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In the morning, the first thing that Apra wanted to do was go to the beach, so Ramona went with her. She was a bit too excited and while running at the promenade, she fell and hit her lip. That could not stop her excitement for the day though, so once Betty arrived at our place, we started for doing some shopping and sightseeing on the way.

I have to say, life on an island seems quite different. Everything is hilly, so you have to always go up or down the hill. The sea is never far and you get the salty fresh air of the ocean whenever you get very close. And people have lunch break in between two and four o’clock in the afternoon! I would never call a meal at 4 o’clock in the afternoon lunch! But that is how it work here – and people don’t seem unhappy about it! On the contrary, they adapt to it, which we saw when we were in town around three o’clock: everyone had lunch and many shops had closed.

Although we all had a great time, I think Apra had the most fun. In the mall, she drove around in a blue cart that looked like a police car and sat on a lot of toy machines, like horses or Spiderman’s car, right next to him. She didn’t know him though and so she just wondered why he was bald!

We had a great day and are looking forward to the next three weeks here!
