So today is the day! Our baby daughter Apra’s second birthday! She is now a whole two years old. Not so small a baby anymore! It is amazing when we think back on the past two years and more, until the beginning of the pregnancy and realize how much happened and simultaneously in how little time! We were going to celebrate her second birthday in big style today – but it happened differently and thanks to Indian flexibility we are still sure that we will have a great party.
We had already invited the schoolchildren and guests from different parts of India for today, the 9th January 2014. The party was planned with cooks, decorators and everything else that is needed for a child’s birthday party. On 6th January however, only three days ago, we saw a weather forecast on TV and they said it would rain on 9th January. We then read the same in the newspaper and checked several internet pages that all said the same: rain on Thursday! The party was planned for outside – what should we do?
We talked among family members and finally decided to shift the party from Thursday to Saturday. Yes, to the amazement of my German wife, we could do this, just three days before the event and with everything already booked. One call to the cook, one to the decorator, one to the person who rents out tables and chairs and that was it! Some hours spent in informing invited guests of the rescheduling completed the change. Unfortunately a few guests who had booked trains for today were not able to change them to Saturday but as the party is on the weekend now, there were others, who can attend who wouldn’t have come today.
We are happy about the decision: since yesterday evening we see that it is cloudy and getting cold and today there is no sun in sight. There is no rain here, either, yet but in Agra and Delhi it is raining already! We feel the chill in the air and believe it may rain in the afternoon. How much can you trust weather reports at all? Whatever will be now or on Saturday though, we are set with our event on the 11th and we are sure we will have a wonderful party!
As today is Apra’s birthday however, we will of course already celebrate today! We will have a cake and presents and most of all we will enjoy watching Apra. Since she has woken up, she is excited, talking about the cake, cutting an imaginary cake and feeding it to everyone and singing ‘Happy Birthday’ for herself. She got the first emails and phone calls wishing her a very happy birthday and on phone, she mostly just wishes it back to the caller!
This joy and excitement is something wonderful and I believe only children are capable of feeling this to its full extent!
My little one, you are the sunshine in our lives! A very happy birthday to you!
